22 year old Indian racing prodigy Sarath Kumar has managed to finish second in the CBR250R class of Honda Asia Dream Cup Road Racing Championship 2014! I for one am pretty stoked at this achievement, because let’s be honest, the only time you hear India and motorcycle racing in the same sentence is when Walking-bag-of-anus-pus bikers are discussing how to make everyone’s lives miserable on our narrow streets by racing everyone all the time.
Sponsored by Honda, Sarath is the first Indian to get a podium spot in the championship, which is an intense 6 round motorcycle racing event where 18 racers from 10 countries across Asia (Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Philippines, Sri Lanka and India) raced on specially modified CBR 250Rs on Asia’s best race tracks in Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and Qatar.
Sarath graduated from the Honda One Make Race platform that concluded in October 2014, and was groomed along with 2 other Indian riders, Arunagiri Prabhu and Sumit Loucs Toppo, to take on the Asia’s best. To give you an idea of how intense the competition is, Sarath finished second in the 6th and final round at Losail International Circuit, Qatar, ahead of Mori Syunya Mori from Japan by a wafer-thin margin of 0:034 seconds only. That’s the kind of gap MotoGP riders fight for!
Sumit and Arunagiri also tried their best, finishing 8th and 17th in the championship respectively. These riders, along with Rajini Krishnan and C.S. Santosh are the handful of Indians active on the global motorcycle racing scene. We need better infrastructure, better training, and better motivation! Let’s gift ourselves a MotoGP world champion in 10 years time, shall we?
