Yamaha R15 Indonesia launch: Finally done!

No idea what took them so long, but Yamaha R15 Indonesia launch has finally taken place! The Japanese powerhouse has launched the Yamaha YZF-R15 in Indonesia. The bike has been the crowd favorite of young guns in India for quite a while now, with 2 version upgrades and minor face-lifts happening from time to time. Now the guys from Indonesia can also have some fun on this beautiful beast!

Yamaha R15 Indonesia launch: Which colors?

The following color schemes have been launched:

1. Racing Blue

This one looks good on the road, given that it uses the factory colors on a street bike!

2. Supernova Red

My favorite of the bunch, this bike has a very nice road presence and looks really mean!

3. Midnight black

A rare color to see with the R15 in India, barely anyone goes for it. Makes it a rarity though!

Another color option is available in India called Grid Gold, which hasn’t been launched in Indonesia yet. I personally don’t like that color much, looks a bit too whacky to me! Maybe that will be launched at a later date as a special edition or something.

Yamaha R15 Indonesia launch: Bike specs?

The Indonesia version of the Yamaha YZF-R15 has the following engine specifications:

  • 150cc, 4 valve engine
  • Liquid cooling
  • Electronic fuel injection
  • 16.5 PS of power
  • 14.5 Nm of torque
  • 136 kgs weight
  • 6 speed manual transmission
  • 40 kmpl fuel economy

To adhere to Indonesian traffic rules, the R15 makes 0.5 PS power and 0.5 Nm torque LESSER than the Indian version. I really don’t think that is going to affect anything much as far as acceleration and top speed goes, and Indonesians are known for pimping the shit out of their rides anyway!

The Yamaha R15 can easily breach the 136 kmph mark, without any modifications. People have gone over 147 kmph with race-spec kits, which aren’t street legal. A friend of mine has put in a K&N filter into his R15, and it makes quite a lot of noise and goes quicker too!

Yamaha R15 Indonesia launch: Price?

The Yamaha R15 has been launched in Indonesia for 28 million Indonesian Rupiah, which translates to 1.47 lacs INR. This is a tad costlier than what the bike costs in India, which is around 1.1 lacs, but it severely undercuts the only competition the bike has in this segment in Indonesia, the Honda CBR150R, which costs 2.25 lacs. For 2.25 lacs, you can go for the Honda CBR250R in India!

The bike will be built in Indonesia, so localization would be heavy. Hopefully the price will stay put at this level, and a lot more exciting and value for money bikes will see the Indonesian shores soon!

Yamaha R15 Indonesia launch: Should you buy it?

DSG Nero reviewThe Yamaha YZF-R15 is a brilliant bike. It is quick, reliable, frugal, and good-looking, everything a young rider could ask for in a bike. The seating position is very sporty, and that takes some getting used to. Initially you might feel some pain in your shoulders and back, but it will go away. Over time, you will find the position very comfortable!

My friend owns the R15, and has ridden it over 25,000 kms, including Ladakh. He has taken it to the highest motorable road in the world – Khardungla, and taken it to every environment possible. The bike is low-maintenance, and has been keeping him real happy for a real long time! You can read his review of the bike here.

So if you are thinking of going for this bike, don’t give it a second thought. It is a beautiful machine for young guys and a very good stepping stone for moving on to the big league! If you have any questions about the R15, do let me know in the comments.
